Day 14 - Henry Fork Service Center & Heritage UMC

Tuesday morning started by meeting back at Redwood UMC to pack the bus and get ready to work. We gathered in a circle with our host families and said a prayer for the day before departing. Then we were on our way to the Henry Fork Service Center. Once we arrived, Lisa Nichols greeted us and gave a brief explanation about the center and the services they provide to the community.

We received a tour of the facilities and then we were given some time to play with the children in the gym.

At 10:000 a.m. we gave a thirty minute concert including some children's songs and audience participation.

We finished the concert and then it was time for the children to separate into their different classes (pre-school, K-1st grade, 2nd-3rd grade). We divided into our three work teams and joined the classrooms. Attendance was taken and then everyone traveled outside because Tuesday is swimming day! Some of the children brought bathing suits but several people got wet even if they weren't planning on it. We played games like four square, basketball, the state game, and the animal game.

Although the children had never met us before, it didn't take long to become friends. Sometimes the children didn't speak a lot of English but we managed to find different ways of communicating and bonding with each other.

Eventually it was time to go back inside and each class went to their rooms and had some time to play a quick game or read some books before heading to lunch.

We all gathered together in the lunch room to eat some chicken nuggets, broccoli, rolls, fruit, and milk before saying goodbye to our new friends. The time had come to load the bus again and depart for Lynchburg, VA. After a quick drive, we arrived at Heritage UMC and started unloading our things.

It quickly became apparent that the box of programs did not make it onto the bus when we left Redwood UMC. Thankfully the secretary at Heritage, LaVonne Van Aalsburg, helped us to print programs for the evening while we arranged for someone to bring us the programs that we left in Rocky Mount. We had some family group time, rehearsed in preparation for the concert and enjoyed a wonderful dinner with some of the youth from the church. Later we gathered in the choir room for a devotion and prayer before heading up to the concert.

There were only a few technical difficulties and once those were worked out, the rest of the concert went smoothly. The sanctuary was beautiful and the acoustics were spectacular. Once the concert was over, it was time to gather our things and go our separate ways with our host families.
