Day 18 - Camp Occohannock on the Bay & Trinity UMC

Saturday morning started with an awesome breakfast back at Great Bridge UMC. They prepared lots of goodies for us and allowed us to take all the leftovers with us on the bus. After we had our fill and the bus was packed, we were on the road to the Eastern Shore to visit and do some work at Camp Occohannock on the Bay.

The camp director, Jerry Mobley, talked to the group about the camp and its history. We learned about the activities they have, future employment opportunities as counselors, and that it has been serving United Methodists for 52 years.

After Jerry finished talking, he requested that we sing one song for him and the rest of the staff so that they could experience our ministry in its fullest. We decided to sing "Praise His Holy Name" a cappella and it was quite interesting starting without an instrument to give us our pitch but we eventually figured it out and they enjoyed it tremendously.

The staff thanked us and then the Voices had about thirty minutes to explore the camp.

The lunch bell rang and it was time to come inside and enjoy a lunch of pizzas, soup and cookies while getting to know the staff a bit better.

We finished lunch and then it was time to get to work. Jerry had us go to the tool shed and then handed out rakes so that we could help get rid of the pine needles that were all over camp. Another group of five youth went over to a trail to rake and sand it.

We finished our work and then headed over to the outdoor chapel by the bay. Rachel, Katie and Jenn led a short devotion and then we tied our remembrance strings on our wrist with our family groups.

After the string ceremony, we loaded the bus and thankfully had no problems getting back on the road this year. We traveled south to Cape Charles for our next concert at Trinity UMC. We began unpacking, settling into our rooms and then went to the sanctuary for rehearsal.

We had a good rehearsal followed by a great dinner provided by the church. We changed into our concert attire, had our devotions and went into the sanctuary to start the concert. Although it was a small venue on the Eastern Shore, we had a great crowd!

The concert went really well and then it was time to get our host family assignments and the wonderful news that everyone needed to report to the church the next morning at 6:15 a.m.
